Humming is not broken, yet. A short triage separates a reset, a jam, a leak, and a replacement, so you pay for the fix you actually need.

Triage First
If you search for garbage disposal plumbing, you usually want one of three things: a jam cleared, a leak fixed, or a new unit installed. At Plumber Repair Pro, we start with the symptom, because the sound and the spot of the leak tell us which of the three it is.
Start here: turn the switch off. Never put a hand inside a disposal. If it hums, it is probably jammed. If it is silent, check power. If it drips, find the wet spot before you run it again.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Hums, does not grind | Stuck flywheel or lodged object | Switch off, call us to free it from below |
| Dead, no sound at all | Tripped reset, GFCI, or breaker | Check the GFCI and breaker, then call if it stays dead |
| Drips under the sink | Flange, dishwasher connection, or discharge joint | Stop running it, note where it drips, call us |
| Slow drain plus odor | Trapped food, worn splash guard, drain-side buildup | Run cold water, skip the chemicals, call us |
A garbage disposal jammed with fibrous food, a bone fragment, or a utensil often hums instead of grinding. That hum is the motor trying to turn a flywheel that cannot move. Switching it on and off repeatedly can overheat the motor, so one attempt is enough, then leave it off. We free the flywheel from the bottom socket, clear the object, and test the unit before we talk about replacement.

A disposal is a scraper, not a trash can. The jams we see most in Spring Hill kitchens come from the same short list: grease poured down the drain, fibrous foods like celery and onion skins, starchy foods like pasta and rice that swell into paste, large bones, coffee grounds in quantity, and non-food items that slipped in with the dishes. Grease is the quiet one. It coats the drain past the disposal, narrows the pipe, and brings the next clog even when the unit itself runs fine.
The habit that keeps a disposal healthy is simple: feed it small amounts of soft scraps only, with plenty of cold water running before, during, and after. Cold water keeps grease solid so it can move through instead of filming the pipe. Chemical drain cleaners do not help a jammed disposal and can splash back on whoever opens it next, so skip them.

Disposal leaks stain cabinet floors, and the cabinet hides them until the smell or the swelling shows up. Three spots cause most of them. The sink flange above the unit can loosen or lose its seal. The dishwasher connection can weep where the hose meets the inlet. The discharge joint to the drain can drip at a gasket. Each has a different fix, from resealing to replacing a gasket to tightening a clamp.

A leak from the bottom of the housing itself is different. That usually means the unit is cracked inside, and no gasket will fix it. If you see water dripping from the very bottom of the unit while the connections above stay dry, plan on a replacement rather than another repair visit.
We replace a disposal when the case is cracked, the motor is burned out, or the same unit has jammed and leaked more than once in a short span. We repair it when the cause is a single jam, a gasket, a flange seal, or a connection. Age matters less than the failure pattern, and we will show you the failed part so the call is yours.
For a new install, size and fit matter more than brand noise. A unit that is too large can crowd the cabinet and fight the drain layout. A quieter unit costs more and may be worth it in an open kitchen where the sink sits near the living space. When a dishwasher shares the drain, the new disposal ships with its dishwasher inlet plug in place, and knocking that plug out is part of the install. InSinkErator support guidance covers care basics for its own units; we service and install units across brands with no affiliation or endorsement implied.

A hum with no grinding usually means the flywheel is stuck on food or an object. Turn the switch off, never put a hand inside, and call us. We can work the flywheel free from below and check whether the unit itself is still sound.
It is a small button on the bottom of the unit. After a jam is cleared and the power is on, press it once. If it keeps tripping, the unit may be overheating or failing, and a repair visit will tell you which.
Keep out grease, fibrous foods like celery and onion skins, starchy foods like pasta and rice that swell into paste, large bones, coffee grounds in quantity, and anything that is not food. Small amounts of soft scraps with plenty of cold water are what a disposal handles best.
Most disposal leaks come from three spots: the sink flange above the unit, the dishwasher connection, or the discharge connection to the drain. A leak from the bottom of the housing itself usually means the unit is cracked and needs replacement.
No. A dishwasher can drain directly without a disposal. If you do have both, the dishwasher drains through the disposal inlet, and a new disposal ships with that inlet plug in place. If the plug is not knocked out at install, the dishwasher will not drain.
